One year after death

I assumed I knew pain. That I had experienced heartache before, but I was wrong. As I held Bosco, the truest friend I had ever known, in my arms as he died, my soul bled in a way I had never come close to experiencing before.

I won’t go into a long story about his life here. Many of his accomplishments and adventures are chronicled alreaady in these pages. Although many of them are not. Some of them are mine to keep. Some of them are only worthy of telling around a crackling campfire, or three shots of whiskey deep.

When Thank You Isn’t Enough

I am still reeling over the sudden loss of our boy and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from all corners of the world. I knew Bosco was not just a dog to me, but I don’t think I ever realized just how many people he had befriended on our journeys. Thank you for all the love, support, kind words, memories, tributes, and flowers. I am humbled and forever grateful.

I am still in disbelief as I write this. If there was ever something I didn’t want to believe, this is it.

He’s gone. My Bosco is gone. My heart is shattered. My world is broken.

Bosco was so much more than just a dog – he was a member of our family and one of my closest friends.

He will be missed more than my simple words can ever begin to express.

Montana Creek Falls

Took off down the ‘trail’ earlier today for this spectacular gem. I use the term trail loosely as it was nearly 14 miles of bushwhacking through dense forest, fighting through loads of devil’s club, and multiple freezing cold water crossings on an overgrown and often nonexistent path.

How exactly does one hug a porcupine?

Those teeth!

The moment when you finally see the porcupine mom has been shooting for the last 20 minutes.

Foreground: Bosco in all his glory. Background: Denali in all hers.

What bushwhacking in Alaska looks like. It wouldn’t be so bad if Devil’s club wasn’t a real thing.

Follow the path your heart leads you on… or the cute bums in front of you… follow those too.

Although my human companions for the day may not agree with me, it was worth it all in the end, and, depending on how much time we have left here in Alaska, I might find myself at the base of this beauty for an overnighter in the future because this is what hiking in the Last Frontier is all about.
